my blog says ‘you must be signed in to comment’ which is ok but… how do you let visitors comment without signing up to your blog membership in wordpress?

You probably don’t need a plugin.
From the Dashboard, select Settings/Discussion. Under “Other comment settings,” uncheck the box for “Users must be registered and logged in to comment.”

Go to Dashboard->Settings->Discussion
Then uncheck the option Users must be registered and logged in to comment
You can use commentluv plugin to get more traffic to your blog.
